Anthony Hopkins Recalls His Journey into the Mind of Hannibal Lecter
In a captivating interview at the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, Anthony Hopkins delved into the intricacies of his iconic portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in Jonathan Demme's masterpiece, 'The Silence of the Lambs'.
Hopkins revealed a surprising initial reaction to the script. When his agent, Jeremy Conway, informed him about the role, Hopkins thought it was a children's tale. However, after reading just 10 pages, he was captivated. He exclaimed, 'This is the best part I've ever read! Despite its small scale, I knew exactly how to embody Lecter.'
When asked about his vision for the character, Hopkins described Lecter as a 'machine'. He explained, 'Lecter is an intellectual genius, but his mind is trapped in a psychotic state, devoid of any human empathy. He possesses compassion, yet lacks a sense of humanity.'
The actor vividly recounted a pivotal scene where Lecter meets Clarice Starling for the first time. He shared, 'During setup, the director asked, 'How do you want to be seen when Clarice enters? Asleep, eating, or something else?' I replied, 'I want to stand right in the center of the cell, sensing her presence as she walks down the corridor.''
Drawing parallels to Mephistopheles in Goethe's 'Faust', Hopkins elaborated, 'Lecter knows our vulnerabilities and seductiveness, and he's aware of Clarice's modest shoes and ambition.'
The audience was treated to Hopkins' iconic lines, including the famous 'I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti' delivery, complete with the distinctive sucking sound. He attributed this sound to Bela Lugosi's portrayal of Count Dracula in 'Dracula' (1931), where he mimics the sound of blood flowing.
Reflecting on his performance as Stevens in 'The Remains of the Day', Hopkins credited Katharine Hepburn for teaching him a valuable lesson. She advised, 'You don't have to act; just be yourself.' He added, 'The more still you are, the more compelling your performance becomes.'
In a humorous aside, Hopkins criticized actors who mumble, drawing from his experience with a young actor who struggled with enunciation. He sternly advised, 'If you mumble, you'll ruin your career. Your role is to convey the story.'
Despite a minor cold, Hopkins expressed his gratitude for his illustrious career, stating, 'I've had an incredibly fortunate life, and I'm still here. It's a mystery why I've endured, and it's a question that haunts us all: Why are we here?'
