Australian Open 2026: Dan Evans Shock Exit in Qualifying | Cam Norrie Wins in Auckland (2026)

A tough start for British tennis fans as the Australian Open qualifying rounds kick off! Former British No. 1 Dan Evans has been knocked out in the first round, setting a challenging tone for the Brits Down Under.

Evans faced Rei Sakamoto of Japan and unfortunately, the match didn't go his way. The scoreline tells the story: 6-1, 6-2 in favor of Sakamoto. Evans seemed to struggle with his serve, a crucial element in any tennis match. He double-faulted four times and only managed to get 48% of his first serves in, a stark contrast to Sakamoto's impressive 74%.

But here's where it gets controversial... Evans's performance mirrored his struggles from the previous year, marking his second consecutive first-round exit in Melbourne's qualifying rounds. The only Grand Slam main draw he reached in 2025 was at Wimbledon, where he was granted a wild card.

However, there's a silver lining for British tennis! Arthur Fery secured a victory, defeating Australian Edward Winter with a score of 6-2, 6-4. George Loffhagen also advanced, triumphing over Germany's Justin Engel in a hard-fought match that ended 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2).

Unfortunately, the bad news continued as Jack Pinnington Jones and Jay Clarke also exited the competition. Pinnington Jones lost in straight sets to Belgium's Gilles Arnaud Bailly, while Clarke was defeated by Brazilian Gustavo Heide.

Now, for some brighter news: Cam Norrie, another British player, had a successful start at the ASB Classic in Auckland. He won his opening match against French qualifier Hugo Gaston with a score of 6-3, 6-4. This victory sets him up for a last-16 match against either Roberto Bautista Agut or Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Norrie, currently ranked No. 28 in the world, is the fifth seed in Auckland and will be the top-ranked British male player at the Australian Open, especially with Jack Draper sidelined due to injury. His performance against Gaston was impressive, with a strong serving display. He landed 69% of his first serves and won 88% of those points. He also created eight break opportunities, converting five of them to secure his victory in just an hour and 20 minutes.

What do you think? Are you surprised by Evans's early exit? Do you think Norrie has what it takes to go far in the tournament? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
