The gloves are off! Donald Trump's former press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, has launched a scathing attack on the BBC, labeling the British broadcaster as "100% fake news" and a "propaganda machine." This strong statement comes amidst growing concerns about bias within the BBC.
Leavitt, a prominent figure in the Trump administration, didn't mince words. She claims that watching BBC news reports during her trips to the UK "ruins" her day, arguing that British taxpayers are essentially funding a "leftist propaganda machine."
But here's where it gets controversial... Leavitt's criticisms were sparked by a BBC Panorama documentary that faced accusations of manipulating a speech given by the former US president. Specifically, the documentary was accused of selectively editing Trump's words.
A leaked document, obtained by The Telegraph, suggests the program "completely misled" viewers by splicing together parts of Trump's speech. The documentary showed Trump saying he would walk with his supporters to the Capitol before the January 6, 2021, riots, urging them to "fight like hell." However, it omitted a crucial section where Trump encouraged the crowd "to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard." This omission is at the heart of the controversy.
Leavitt didn't hold back in her interview with The Telegraph, stating that the "purposefully dishonest, selectively edited clip by the BBC is further evidence that they are total, 100% fake news." She went on to express her frustration at being "forced to watch the BBC" during her travels with President Trump, claiming it subjected her to "blatant propaganda and lies."
The Telegraph's reporting is based on a memo written by Michael Prescott, a former advisor to the BBC's editorial guidelines and standards committee. Prescott, who has since left his role, hasn't commented on the document. The memo reportedly claims that the edited clip was "completely misleading" and that the omission of Trump's call for peaceful protest was a key reason he wasn't charged with inciting a riot.
And this is the part most people miss... The memo also alleges that Prescott raised concerns about the BBC Arabic's coverage of the war in Gaza, citing "systemic problems" and "stark differences" between the Arabic and main BBC website coverage. He reportedly highlighted the repeated use of commentators with antisemitic or pro-Hamas views.
Furthermore, the 19-page dossier reportedly criticizes the BBC's coverage of transgender issues, claiming the broadcaster has been "captured by a small group of [staff] promoting the Stonewall view" of gender identity issues. It alleges that stories raising complex questions about trans issues were suppressed, with a "constant drip-feed of one-sided stories celebrating the trans experience without adequate balance or objectivity."
In response to these allegations, the BBC stated that while they don't comment on leaked documents, they take feedback seriously. They also noted that Michael Prescott is a former advisor to a board committee where differing views and opinions of their coverage are routinely discussed and debated.
