Breaking News: Sherrone Moore, U-M Football Coach, Detained in Assault Investigation (2026)

Bold headline: A high-profile coaching crisis at Michigan unfolds as a firing and a police investigation collide, leaving the football program in turmoil.

University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore was detained by police on Wednesday, the same day school officials announced his dismissal amid allegations of an "inappropriate relationship" with a staff member. Court records show Moore, 39, was taken into custody around 4:10 p.m. local time after officers were called to a home in Pittsfield Township, Michigan, to investigate an alleged assault, according to a statement from the Pittsfield Township Police Department.

Authorities did not publicly identify the detainee by name in the assault probe. However, Washtenaw County Jail online records indicate that Moore was being held there as of 11 a.m. local time on Thursday, awaiting charges. ESPN later reported that Moore is a suspect in the assault investigation and is expected to appear in court for arraignment on Friday.

The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office told ESPN that the case remains under active investigation and that no charging decisions or arraignment were expected that day. They added that they will provide updates once a charging decision is made.

Moore, who is the first African American head coach in Michigan’s storied football history, was detained just hours after the university announced his firing following an internal review that found credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. University athletic director Warde Manuel emphasized that such conduct violates university policy and that Michigan maintains a zero-tolerance stance.

President Domenico Grasso reaffirmed the university’s stance on Thursday, stating that the investigation would continue and inviting anyone with information to come forward. Grasso stressed that there is "absolutely no tolerance for this conduct at the University of Michigan. None."

Moore, described in the university’s bio as a married father of three daughters, served two seasons as head coach after previously acting as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Following Moore’s departure, Biff Poggi has been appointed interim head coach. The Wolverines are preparing to face the Texas Longhorns in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida, on New Year’s Eve.

Michigan finished the season 9-3 and ranked 18th in the College Football Playoff rankings. Across his tenure, Moore compiled an 18-8 record as Michigan’s head coach after succeeding Jim Harbaugh.
