Brewers Sign Luis Rengifo: Veteran Infielder to Shore Up Depth in 2026 | MLB News (2026)

Bold shift at third base could redefine the Brewers’ infield depth. Milwaukee disclosed on Monday that they’ve traded away their entire third-base depth chart, signaling an early-season scramble to bolster infield coverage just as spring training kicked off. With only David Hamilton as a credible third-base option on the 40-man roster, the team moved quickly to address the gap. By Friday, they had made an addition to shore up that depth.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported that the Brewers are signing veteran utility infielder Luis Rengifo to a one-year deal. The contract pays $3.5 million in salary, with up to $1.5 million in incentives. The agreement includes a mutual option for 2027 valued at $10 million.

Rengifo has spent his seven-year career with the Los Angeles Angels. He’s demonstrated versatility, spending time at three infield spots and all three outfield positions. His most productive seasons came in 2022 and 2023, when he slugged 17 and 16 home runs, respectively, and posted a .264 batting average.

In 2024, Rengifo appeared set for a breakout campaign, posting a career-best .300 batting average, a .347 on-base percentage, and 24 stolen bases, but a wrist injury requiring surgery limited him to 78 games. He’s shown solid contact skills, can hit from both sides of the plate with moderate power, and offers defensive flexibility across the diamond.

The 2025 season was tougher, as he slashed .238/.287/.335 with nine homers and a 73 OPS+. He did, however, log a healthy 147 games, indicating durability.

Now in Milwaukee, Rengifo immediately becomes the most experienced third baseman on the roster and appears to have a strong path to regular playing time at the hot corner. As a switch hitter, he remains largely unaffected by platoon needs, delivering power from both sides while typically posting a higher average as a right-handed batter.

Brewers vice president of baseball operations Matt Arnold suggested after the Durbin trade that the team valued infield depth but were open to further moves.

Rengifo fits the Brewers’ current blueprint: high-contact hitting, relatively low strikeout rates, speed, and versatility on defense. He can serve as a solid stopgap at third base in Milwaukee until the organization’s top infield prospects are ready. Once those youngsters are ready—think Jett Williams, Cooper Pratt, or Brock Wilken—Rengifo can transition into a utility role where he’s likely a better long-term fit. He won’t obstruct the progress of Milwaukee’s rising talents; instead, he can bridge the gap as they develop.
