A groundbreaking study is underway to test whether specialized helmets can significantly reduce the risk of concussions in football players. The study, led by scientists from Monash University with support from Connectivity Traumatic Brain Injury Australia, aims to address a critical issue in the sport: the prevention of concussions. While the AFL and NRL have implemented return-to-play protocols after concussions, little focus has been given to prevention. The study involves 600 players aged 16 and over wearing the helmets during elite and community football and rugby games across the country. The helmets, designed by industrial designer Graeme Attey, feature a lattice of connecting spheres that can reduce the force transmitted to a player's head during impact by more than 90 percent, according to independent testing. However, the science behind helmets and concussion prevention is complex. Attey argues that many helmets on the market have been designed to adhere to guidelines that prioritize ear protection over concussion prevention. The study's results could have significant implications for the future of contact sports, potentially leading to mandatory helmet use. However, concerns about cost and accessibility arise, as specialized helmets are not cheap. The study's findings will be crucial in determining whether helmets can be an effective strategy for reducing concussion risk in football players.
