Debunking the Myth: USC's Commitment to In-State Students (2026)

A bold statement: South Carolina's public universities are often accused of neglecting their own state's students. But is this misconception true? Let's dive into the facts and uncover the truth.

At a recent meeting, State Rep. Nathan Ballentine challenged University of South Carolina President Michael Amiridis to address this perception. And here's where it gets interesting: Amiridis firmly denied the claim, stating, "This story that we are letting the students out is not true."

The numbers back him up. This year, USC received over 60,000 applications, with a significant portion, around 15,000, coming from in-state residents. Of these, a remarkable 75% were directly admitted, while another 15% were offered a bridge program to ensure their success. Only a small fraction, 10%, were denied admission.

But here's the part most people miss: the university's entire system is almost exclusively made up of in-state students, according to Amiridis. In fact, the University of South Carolina in Columbia enrolled over 40,000 students last fall, including the largest-ever freshman class of more than 7,800 students. And get this, over half of the current student body, a whopping 56.3%, is from the Palmetto State.

Scott Verzyl, USC's vice president of enrollment, confirms that there's a record number of South Carolinians in the undergraduate class right now. So, why the public misperception? Verzyl calls it "befuddling."

Even if a South Carolinian is admitted, there are various factors that influence their decision to attend, including academic programs, peer influence, and financial aid. Verzyl emphasizes that USC gives preference to in-state students, admitting all qualified South Carolina residents who apply, and taking as many out-of-state students as needed to meet overall enrollment goals.

So, is this a case of a misunderstood success story? Or is there more to uncover? What do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below. We'd love to hear your perspective!
