Filipe Luis: Ex-Chelsea Defender sacked as Flamengo Manager After 8-0 Win (2026)

Filipe Luis: Ex-Chelsea defender dismissed as Flamengo coach just hours after an 8-0 victory propelled them into this weekend’s Campeonato Carioca final

Former Chelsea stalwart Filipe Luis has been relieved of his duties as Flamengo’s manager, a decision announced mere hours after the Brazilian club hammered Madureira 8-0 to advance to the Carioca final this weekend.

At 40 years old, Luis averaged a trophy every 14 games during his tenure, guiding Flamengo to seven titles across 100 matches since taking over from Brazil coach Tite in September 2024.

Flamengo have suffered consecutive final defeats in 2026, finishing as runners-up in the Supercopa do Brasil and the Recopa Sudamericana last month.

Despite sealing an 11-0 aggregate victory over Madureira following Monday’s emphatic 8-0 second leg, the club confirmed that Luis will not continue in charge as they head toward Sunday’s final with Fluminense for a shot at a third straight Carioca crown.

The club’s statement, issued at 00:59 local time, read: Filipe Luis will no longer be in charge of the professional team. Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linhares (physical trainer) are also leaving the club along with him. Flamengo expressed gratitude to the former player and coach for everything achieved and shared, and wished him continued success in his professional journey.

Luis’s list of achievements includes lifting the Premier League with Chelsea in 2015 under Jose Mourinho, and guiding Flamengo to Copa Libertadores glory in 2025. He became the ninth individual to win the competition both as a player and as a coach, having previously claimed Flamengo’s Libertadores titles as a player in 2019 and 2022.

During his tenure, he also collected Serie A, Copa do Brasil, Supercopa do Brasil, Campeonato Carioca, and FIFA titles such as the Club World Cup and the FIFA Derby of the Americas honors, after having led Flamengo’s youth squads to league triumphs.

Flamengo also reached the knockout rounds of last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, narrowly losing 4-2 to Bayern Munich after topping their group by defeating eventual champions Chelsea.

Currently, Flamengo sit 11th in Brazil’s top flight, with one win, one draw, and one defeat from their opening three matches. They sit six points behind leaders Palmeiras, though they do hold a game in hand.
