Griffin Conine: Marlins' Holiday Hero (2026)

The power of giving back: how the Marlins spread holiday cheer

A heartwarming initiative that brings joy to young lives.

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the Miami Marlins and TECO Peoples Gas joined forces to bring a special holiday experience to elementary school students from underserved areas. This story showcases the impact of such initiatives and the importance of giving back.

A group of 120 eager students, aged 5 to 8, from nearby Lenora B. Smith Elementary, Citrus Grove K-8, and Frederick Douglass Elementary, were treated to a unique field trip at loanDepot park. The event, Deck the Diamond, aimed to create lasting memories and brighten the holiday season for these young minds.

But here's where it gets controversial... Is it enough to provide gifts and treats, or should we focus more on educational activities? Let's explore this further.

Outfielder Griffin Conine, the Marlins' Roberto Clemente Award nominee, along with the beloved mascots Billy the Marlin and Pepito the Rooster, played a pivotal role in making this event memorable. With the roof open on a pleasant South Florida day, they distributed presents and guided the children through various stations, each offering a unique experience.

Conine, a South Florida native, shared his thoughts: "Being part of the Marlins community, especially during the holidays, is a privilege. It's about giving back and bringing joy to these kids."

The event featured a range of activities, from arts and crafts like DIY ornaments and gratitude sheets, to field games teaching the fundamentals of baseball and softball. There was even a reindeer ring toss! The students also enjoyed a delicious lunch from Chick-Fil-A, a photo opportunity with the stars, and, of course, holiday treats.

Each student left with a gift from the Marlins and TECO Peoples Gas, as well as the holiday ornament they crafted themselves. A truly special memento to cherish.

Alfredo Mesa, Marlins vice president of public affairs, emphasized the organization's commitment: "Giving back is in our DNA. We're proud to partner with TECO Peoples Gas to bring a smile to these kids' faces."

Employees from both organizations volunteered their time, decorating Christmas trees, wrapping presents, and engaging with the community. Sergio Abreu, TECO Peoples Gas regional manager, highlighted the impact: "It's a wonderful opportunity for our employees to connect with the community and enjoy the holiday spirit together."

And this is the part most people miss... The gift-giving station stole the show! Students received an array of exciting presents, from Beblox building blocks to dancing challenge playmats. Conine summed it up: "This is the best part! Seeing the kids' excitement is priceless."

The Marlins and TECO Peoples Gas have proven that community engagement and giving back can create a lasting impact. But what do you think? Is this initiative enough, or should organizations do more? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
