Blackfriars' 2025 Dux, Luke Tsavdaridis, believes that embracing our errors is the key to unlocking our true potential. In his captivating Laureate Address, Luke encourages students to ditch their pencils and embrace the power of the pen.
The pen, he argues, forces us to confront our mistakes head-on. Unlike the pencil, which allows us to easily erase our errors, the pen demands that we acknowledge and learn from our missteps. Luke emphasizes that this is a crucial lesson for life. Just as we can't erase our mistakes with a pen, we must learn to build upon them and turn them into opportunities for growth.
Luke shares a powerful example of perseverance through failure. He introduces Shuji Nakamura, the brilliant inventor of the blue LED. Despite facing countless experiments that didn't work, crystals that cracked, and devices that produced barely any light, Nakamura kept pushing forward. His unwavering determination led to the creation of the first high-brightness blue LED in 1993, revolutionizing the lighting and electronics industries.
"Don't be ashamed of your mistakes," Luke urges. "Know them, understand them, and use them as stepping stones to success."
Looking ahead to the Class of 2026, Luke offers valuable advice. He encourages students to prioritize self-care, emphasizing that the challenges they face throughout the year will test them in ways exams never can. He recommends sharing struggles with trusted individuals and highlights the importance of a good night's sleep as a powerful study tool. Luke also stresses the significance of balance, urging students not to sacrifice their passions and relationships for academic success.
"Don't underestimate the power of balance," he advises. "The skills you learn in managing your time and energy in Year 12 will have a more profound impact on your future than any grades you achieve."
Lastly, Luke emphasizes the importance of independent thought. He believes that the most successful people in history dared to forge their own paths, and he encourages the Class of 2026 to do the same. The annual Laureate Assembly celebrates the achievements of students who have achieved ATARs of 90 or above, as well as Blackfriars scholarship recipients and other award winners, all of whom embody this spirit of embracing challenges and learning from mistakes.
