Malaysia's Affordable Internet: Fastest 5G in Southeast Asia & Global Rankings (2026)

Did you know that Malaysia boasts some of the most affordable internet rates in the world? It’s true—and it’s a game-changer for millions. According to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Malaysia’s internet costs just 2 cents per gigabyte, placing it among the top 10 cheapest countries globally. This achievement isn’t just a number; it’s a testament to the government’s relentless push for affordable and inclusive digital access for all Malaysians. But here’s where it gets even more impressive: Malaysia has also deployed its 5G network at lightning speed, now ranking as the fastest in Southeast Asia and second only to South Korea in the Asia-Pacific region. How did they pull this off? Fahmi credits an unprecedented collaboration among Malaysian telcos, who set aside competition to reach a consensus—a rare feat in the industry.

Fahmi shared these insights during a reception with the Malaysian Diaspora in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he’s leading the delegation to the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2025 (WTDC-25). His mission? To secure Malaysia’s re-election to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the 2027–2030 term. But why does this matter? Because it solidifies Malaysia’s role as a global leader in telecommunications and digital innovation.

During the event, Fahmi also highlighted Malaysia’s successful hosting of the 47th ASEAN Summit in October, which he believes has reshaped global perceptions of both Malaysia and ASEAN. And this is the part most people miss: With a population of 660 million, ASEAN is 1.5 times larger than the European Union. If the region can unite and foster peace, its potential is limitless. But is unity truly achievable in such a diverse region? That’s a question worth debating.

The reception was attended by key figures, including Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini, Senior Advisor of International Affairs at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and Malaysian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ahmad Kamrizamil Mohd Riza. Kamrizamil emphasized that Fahmi’s participation in WTDC-25 underscores Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening ties with Azerbaijan, particularly in communication, technology, and digital sectors.

For Malaysians abroad, like Kelvin Chong, a chef and founder of the Culinary Arts Centre of Azerbaijan (CASA), these developments are a source of pride. Chong, who’s lived in Azerbaijan for 18 years, expressed excitement about Malaysia’s progress and hopes more Malaysians will explore Azerbaijan’s beauty and culture.

But here’s the controversial question: While Malaysia’s digital advancements are commendable, are they doing enough to bridge the urban-rural divide in internet access? And how can ASEAN truly unite when member states have such varying priorities? Let’s discuss—what’s your take?
