Breaking News: England Captain Maro Itoje Out Indefinitely!
It's a tough blow for English rugby fans: Maro Itoje, the formidable England captain, will be sidelined until January. This news comes straight from his club, Saracens, who have confirmed that Itoje is still recovering from a knee injury sustained during the November internationals.
Itoje hasn't played since England's victory over Argentina at the end of November. Initially, there was hope he'd be back in action sooner, but Saracens are taking a more cautious approach. This is a crucial reminder of how demanding professional rugby can be on the body.
"Maro is still carrying an injury from the autumn so we don’t expect to see him for a while. The time scale is a little bit vague at the moment," explained Saracens' director of rugby, Mark McCall. He further added that Itoje might be back for the Leicester Tigers game, which is scheduled for the first week of January.
Thankfully, Itoje hasn't required surgery, but this extended absence is still significant. It's especially noteworthy given his heavy workload at the international level. He captained the British & Irish Lions on their tour to Australia earlier this year. That grueling schedule also caused him to miss the first three league fixtures for Saracens at the start of the Premiership season.
His return is now most likely to be against the Leicester Tigers on January 4th, or potentially in the Investec Champions Cup clash with Toulouse the following week. This raises a key question: Will Itoje's extended absence impact England's performance in the upcoming Six Nations tournament?
