Feeling the pinch at the pump? Deloitte's latest energy forecast paints a picture of sluggish oil prices, despite Canada's massive oil reserves. Let's dive in!
The consulting giant predicts that crude oil prices will remain relatively stagnant this year. Specifically, the key U.S. light oil benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, is expected to hover around US$58 per barrel. To put that in perspective, that's roughly 20% lower than where it stood last year and about 12% below the average price predicted for 2025.
But here's where it gets controversial... Deloitte's partner, Andrew Botterill, mentions that this forecast doesn't factor in the recent U.S. actions in Venezuela. However, he anticipates that the global oil oversupply will persist in the short term.
On a brighter note, natural gas prices in Alberta are expected to experience a surge. They're projected to rise to an average of $2.95 per mmBTU next year, a significant jump from last year's average of $1.72. This increase is largely attributed to the LNG Canada export terminal, which is now shipping Canadian gas to Asia.
And this is the part most people miss... Botterill is closely monitoring the impact of energy-hungry artificial intelligence data centers on pricing, though it's not yet reflected in the current forecasts.
