Get ready for an exciting chapter in the Columbus Blue Jackets' journey! Rick Bowness, at 70, is back and raring to go as the team's new head coach.
On a sunny day in Florida, Rick Bowness, a true hockey legend, received a life-changing call from Don Waddell, the Columbus Blue Jackets' president and general manager. Little did he know, this call would mark his return to the NHL coaching scene.
But here's where it gets controversial... Bowness, now the league's oldest head coach, is stepping back into the spotlight after a two-year retirement due to health concerns for himself and his wife, Judy. Despite his age, he's feeling rejuvenated and ready for the challenge.
"I'm feeling a whole lot better, and so is Judy. That's what opened the door for me to coach again," Bowness shared.
And this is the part most people miss... Bowness has an impressive coaching resume, having guided teams like the Winnipeg Jets, Boston, Ottawa, and the New York Islanders. He even led the Dallas Stars to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020!
Now, he's taking on the task of turning around the Blue Jackets' season. With a record of 19-19-7, they're currently last in the East and in desperate need of a playoff push.
"For us, it's a wake-up call. We can use this as a motivator to perform better," said Boone Jenner, the team's captain.
Bowness replaces Dean Evason, who was let go after a disappointing start to the season. Evason had guided the team through a tough emotional year following the death of star forward Johnny Gaudreau in 2024.
But Bowness is no stranger to adversity. He believes the key to success lies in defensive strategies, limiting odd-man rushes, and improving the team's penalty-killing unit, which currently ranks among the league's worst.
"You can't just outscore your problems. I'll be straightforward and detailed in my approach. I'm not worried about my career at this stage; I'm focused on winning," Bowness asserted.
One of Bowness' former players, Sean Monahan, believes in his ability to bring structure and motivation to the team.
"He's tough but fair. He's passionate about winning, and he's experienced it all. That's why we respect him so much," Monahan said.
So, will Bowness' return spark a playoff run for the Blue Jackets? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: with Bowness at the helm, the team is in capable hands.
