The journey of Shah Rukh Khan, the iconic Bollywood star, is a testament to the power of perseverance and the fulfillment of dreams. But it all began with a simple promise made on a stroll along the sea. On a quiet night at Bandstand, Shah Rukh, then just a young actor, and his wife, Gauri, stumbled upon a beautiful heritage bungalow that took their breath away. In a moment of youthful ambition, Shah Rukh declared to Gauri, 'One day, that house will be ours.'
This seemingly whimsical promise was rooted in a deep emotional connection and a unique perspective shaped by his upbringing in Delhi. Shah Rukh explained that his childhood experience of living in bungalows, even as a lower-middle-class family, instilled in him a sense of familiarity and comfort with spacious homes. He envisioned his future home in Mumbai to be open, airy, and reflective of those cherished memories.
Fast forward to the late 1990s, and the dream began to take shape. Shah Rukh and Gauri would often take leisurely walks near the bungalow, now known as Mannat, which was then owned by the Bai Khorshed Bhanu Sanjana Trust. These walks were filled with big dreams and quiet planning, as they envisioned a future that seemed almost impossible at the time. The connection to the house only grew stronger as they filmed the song 'Chaand Taare' from the movie 'Yes Boss' nearby.
However, the path to ownership was not without its challenges. The purchase involved complex legal procedures and complications with neighboring plots. Despite these obstacles, Shah Rukh remained steadfast in his determination to keep his promise. In 2001, he finally acquired the villa, renaming it Jannat, symbolizing the realization of his dream. A few years later, in 2005, the name was changed to Mannat, a fitting title that encapsulates the heartfelt wish that had finally come to fruition.
Today, Mannat stands as one of Mumbai's most iconic landmarks, a testament to the power of perseverance and the fulfillment of dreams. The bungalow, estimated to be worth around Rs 200 crore, is a six-storey residence with expansive bedrooms, grand living spaces, a gym, a library, and even a personal auditorium. It has evolved from a 1920s Grade III heritage villa called Villa Vienna, restored and expanded to match the vision Shah Rukh and Gauri once shared.
