"You've got a 1940s Stalin problem inside the American military right now," Eaton warns.
The recent lethal strikes on boats in Latin American waters, justified by the administration as targeting "narco-terrorists," are a cause for concern for Eaton. He believes these actions, and the controversial second strike that killed survivors, are signs of a deeper problem.
Hegseth's order to "kill everybody" is a clear violation of the Department of Defense's manual on the laws of war. Eaton sees this as either a war crime or murder, comparing it to the actions of U-boat commanders during World War II.
Hegseth's bizarre summit with military commanders, where he berated them for "wokeness" and encouraged dissenters to resign, further highlights the toxic environment within the military.
Eaton describes this meeting as "disgusting" and "antithetical to the US military's values."
Looking ahead, Eaton fears that these violations of the rules of war, committed outside US territory, could soon become a domestic reality. The federalization of the National Guard and their deployment into Democratic-controlled cities is a cause for concern, with ongoing legal challenges in federal courts.
Eaton's greatest fear is a potential clash between federalized National Guard troops and state/local police. He envisions a scenario where the Texas National Guard, under federal control, is deployed to Baltimore against the city and state's wishes, leading to a dangerous escalation.
"What could go wrong?" Eaton asks. "It's a recipe for disaster, with both sides believing they're acting legally."
